In short: Launched in 1999, Lenta.ru grew to become one of Russia's most influential digital news sources. Yet, its history is defined by a recurring tension between journalistic integrity and state pressure, culminating in mass staff resignations, leadership purges, and rare acts of internal defiance against government-enforced media narratives.

Founded in 1999 by Anton Nosik and Gleb Pavlovsky, Lenta.ru established itself as a dominant force in the Russian-language internet. By 2010, the Berkman Center identified it as the most cited news source in the Russian blogosphere, and by 2013, it ranked as the fifth most-trafficked news website in Europe. This period of growth saw significant technical evolution, including a major 2013 site redesign, the first of its kind since 2004.

The outlet's trajectory shifted dramatically in March 2014. Following an interview with a Right Sector representative, the Russian censorship body Roskomnadzor issued a warning, citing anti-extremism laws. Owner Alexander Mamut responded by firing Editor-in-Chief Galina Timchenko and replacing her with Alexey Goreslavsky. This triggered a mass exodus: 39 staff members, including 32 journalists and the entire photo-editing team, resigned in protest. They argued the move was intended to transform the publication into a Kremlin-controlled propaganda tool, a sentiment echoed by the OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media.

The tension persisted into the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine. On May 9, 2022, journalists Egor Polyakov and Alexandra Miroshnikova briefly bypassed government guidelines to publish articles detailing civilian mass killings, the destruction of Mariupol, and systemic governmental deception. Although the content was swiftly scrubbed, the incident highlighted the ongoing friction between the publication's institutional structure and the individual convictions of its staff. Many of those who left in 2014 went on to found Meduza, illustrating how the internal conflicts at Lenta.ru helped shape the broader landscape of independent Russian journalism.
