A blockbuster thriller about the cycle of violence in the heart of Kashmir
In short: Released in 2000, this action drama explores how personal trauma fuels political radicalization. Directed by Vidhu Vinod Chopra, the film follows a young man caught between his adoptive father, a police officer, and the militant group that raised him to carry out a devastating mission of vengeance.
The narrative centers on Altaaf Khan, who is orphaned during a police raid led by Inayat Khan. Unaware that his adoptive father was responsible for his parents' deaths, Altaaf eventually discovers the truth and is recruited by a militant leader named Hilal Kohistani. A decade later, Altaaf returns to Srinagar to execute a terrorist plot, only to realize that his mentor has manipulated him into a plan designed to incite sectarian violence rather than achieve political goals.
Filmed on location in Srinagar, the production faced unique challenges due to the region's volatility. Lead actor Hrithik Roshan, who had not yet debuted when filming began, was once mistaken for a local insurgent by security personnel while dressed in character. The film’s release coincided with the Diwali festival, placing it in direct competition with Mohabbatein. Despite this, it achieved significant commercial success, securing its place as the third most profitable Hindi-language production of that year.
Critical reception was largely favorable, with reviewers praising the film's emotional intensity and technical production. However, some critics argued that the story prioritized personal melodrama over a nuanced examination of the actual political situation in Kashmir. The soundtrack, composed by the trio Shankar–Ehsaan–Loy, was also a notable success, selling 1.5 million units and becoming one of the best-selling albums of 2000, largely due to the popularity of the folk-inspired track Bumbro.
