In short: Pathaan, a 2023 action thriller, redefined Indian box office records by grossing over 1,000 crore worldwide. As the fourth installment in the YRF Spy Universe, the film features Shah Rukh Khan as an exiled agent fighting to stop a deadly viral attack, blending global spectacle with traditional masala entertainment.

Directed by Siddharth Anand and produced by Aditya Chopra, Pathaan follows a RAW agent who forms a covert unit to thwart a rogue former operative named Jim. The plot centers on a biological weapon codenamed Raktbeej, a mutated smallpox virus developed to target India. The film’s narrative spans international locations including Afghanistan, Spain, Russia, and Siberia, marking the first time an Indian production filmed at Lake Baikal. The production, which began in November 2020, faced significant delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic but eventually wrapped in late 2022.

The film’s release was marked by intense controversy, particularly surrounding the song Besharam Rang. Protests erupted over the lead actress's attire, leading to calls for bans and public demonstrations in several Indian states. Despite these tensions, the Central Board of Film Certification granted the film a U/A certificate after minor edits. The film’s marketing strategy was notably unconventional, eschewing traditional media interactions and public events in favor of a limited, high-impact promotional campaign.

Commercially, Pathaan shattered numerous records, becoming the fastest Hindi film to cross the 400 crore mark domestically and the first to gross over 100 million USD without a release in China. It sold approximately 35 million tickets, cementing its status as an all-time blockbuster. While critics were divided—with some praising its intoxicating, over-the-top action and star power, and others dismissing it as a slapdash pulp exercise—the film’s success solidified its place in the YRF Spy Universe. A sequel is currently in development, though the planned crossover project Tiger vs Pathaan was ultimately shelved in 2026 due to budget constraints.
