Why the most miserable man in Springfield is a masterpiece of animated design
In short: Moe Szyslak is more than a grumpy bartender. Inspired by real-life prank call victims and modeled after a gorilla, this complex character balances violent outbursts with surprising tenderness. From his shifting ethnic origins to his tragic love life, Moe remains one of the most enduringly dark figures in television history.
Moe Szyslak, the proprietor of Moe's Tavern, serves as a central, albeit deeply troubled, fixture in The Simpsons. Voiced by Hank Azaria, the character was originally inspired by Louis Red Deutsch, a man famous for his explosive, profane reactions to persistent prank callers. This real-life dynamic directly informed the show's iconic gag where Bart Simpson repeatedly baits Moe into delivering aggressive, threatening responses. Animator Dan Haskett designed Moe with a face modeled after a gorilla, while animator Mark Kirkland noted that the character is intentionally drawn with such extreme ugliness that minor production errors often go unnoticed.
The character is defined by a series of contradictions. While he is frequently portrayed as a lonely, cantankerous, and violent individual prone to suicidal despair, he also possesses a hidden, sentimental side. He has been shown reading to the homeless, donating $25,000 to Puerto Rico, and displaying genuine, if fleeting, selflessness in his romantic pursuits. His love life is a recurring source of tragedy, marked by his inability to maintain relationships due to his own insecurities, vulgarity, and, at times, criminal behavior. His romantic history includes a failed engagement to a woman named Maya, which he attempted to salvage through a drastic, ill-fated plan to shorten his own leg bones.
Moe's background is intentionally inconsistent, serving as a running joke throughout the series. His ethnic heritage has been variously claimed as Polish, Hungarian, Italian, Dutch, Irish, and Armenian, among others. Similarly, his childhood stories—ranging from being a circus freak to a former child actor—frequently conflict. This lack of a fixed history is mirrored by his name; while "Szyslak" was chosen by writers Bill Oakley and Josh Weinstein to give him the initials M.S. for a plot point, his first name "Moe" has been inconsistently explained. Despite these shifting details, Moe remains a foundational element of the show, earning Hank Azaria multiple Primetime Emmy Awards for his performance.
