How a Disneyland ride inspired a legendary pirate adventure series
In short: In 1990, Ron Gilbert launched a series that redefined adventure gaming. Inspired by the ambiance of Disneyland's Pirates of the Caribbean ride and the story of Tim Powers' book On Stranger Tides, Monkey Island follows the hapless Guybrush Threepwood's quest to become a notorious Caribbean pirate.
The series began with The Secret of Monkey Island, which debuted in 1990 across platforms including Amiga, MS-DOS, Atari ST, and Macintosh. Created by Ron Gilbert, the game aimed to capture the feeling of being able to step off the Pirates of the Caribbean ride and explore a storybook world. The original titles featured text-only dialogue, with conversations appearing as written captions above characters' heads.
The plot revolves around Guybrush Threepwood attempting to vanquish the undead pirate LeChuck and secure Governor Elaine Marley's affection. The series underwent several stylistic changes; Dave Grossman and Tim Schafer co-wrote the initial two titles, yet they did not participate in the third or fourth entries. Grossman later returned as a creative director for the fifth game, Tales of Monkey Island, and co-wrote the sixth installment, Return to Monkey Island, with Gilbert in 2022.
The franchise has faced complex ownership history. Following the 2012 purchase of LucasArts by The Walt Disney Company, the rights to the series became Disney's property. This led to a period where Disney Interactive transitioned to a licensing model. In response, fans launched an online petition to have Disney sell the franchise to Ron Gilbert, which had gathered approximately 29,000 signatures by December 2021.
The series' influence extends into modern gaming through numerous Easter eggs. References to the franchise appear in Uncharted 4: A Thief's End, Hitman 3, and The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. Additionally, Sea of Thieves released a themed expansion titled "The Legend of Monkey Island" in July 2023, set between the third and fourth original games.
