A former slave returns to Korea as a US officer in this historical epic.
In short: Set in the early 1900s, Mr. Sunshine follows Eugene Choi, who escapes Joseon as a child only to return as a US Marine captain. Amidst the looming threat of Japanese colonization, he finds himself entangled with a noblewoman turned sniper and a complex web of revolutionaries and imperial agents.
The series, which aired on tvN in 2018, is set in Hanseong during a period of intense geopolitical transition. It centers on Eugene Choi, a man born into slavery who flees to the United States following the 1871 Shinmiyangyo incident. After serving in the US Marine Corps, including combat in the Spanish–American War, he returns to his birthplace as a diplomatic officer. His arrival forces him to navigate the precarious divide between his duty as a neutral American representative and his growing allegiance to the Korean independence movement.
Central to the narrative is Go Ae-shin, a noblewoman who leads a double life as a sniper for the Righteous Army. Her path crosses with Eugene’s, as well as with other figures like Gu Dong-mae, a ruthless member of the Japanese Yakuza, and Kudo Hina, a powerful hotelier seeking to atone for her father's pro-Japanese betrayals. These characters are caught in the crossfire of the Empire of Japan’s efforts to colonize Korea, with the plot highlighting the struggles of common people and the desperation of the Korean monarch to maintain sovereignty.
Critically acclaimed for its cinematography and storytelling, the show became the third highest-rated series in Korean cable history, with its finale drawing 18.129% viewership. It earned significant recognition, including eight nominations at the 55th Baeksang Arts Awards, where lead actor Lee Byung-hun secured a win. The series is noted for its strong female characters and its nuanced portrayal of the era's social hierarchies, illustrating the personal costs of political upheaval and the fight for national identity.
