A modern chef finds himself trapped in the body of a Joseon-era queen.
In short: In the South Korean hit Mr. Queen, a womanizing Blue House chef experiences a near-death event that transports his soul into the body of Queen Cheorin. As he navigates the Joseon period, he must balance royal court politics with a desperate, comedic mission to return to his own life.
The 2020 television series Mr. Queen, directed by Yoon Sung-sik, offers a unique spin on historical drama by blending the Joseon period with a modern-day consciousness. The protagonist, Jang Bong-hwan, is a free-spirited chef working at the Blue House who finds his life upended after falling into a pool. He wakes up inside the body of Queen Cheorin, played by Shin Hye-sun, and must adapt to his new reality while attempting to find a way back to his original body in modern Korea.
The narrative centers on the power dynamics of the royal court. While King Cheoljong, portrayed by Kim Jung-hyun, is the reigning monarch, he serves primarily as a figurehead. The true authority lies with Queen Sunwon, the widow of the late King Sunjo. Bong-hwan, now inhabiting the Queen's body, attempts to secure his position by using his culinary skills to win the favor of the powerful Queen Sunwon. However, he soon realizes that the court is filled with hidden agendas and that the King possesses a suspicious, dark side that contradicts his gentle public persona.
Despite controversies, the series achieved significant commercial success. It stands as the eleventh highest-rated drama in the history of Korean cable television, with its final episode securing a nationwide rating of 17.371%. The production was a major undertaking, with casting confirmed throughout 2020 and filming briefly interrupted in November of that year due to a positive COVID-19 test among the supporting cast. The show, which is based on the Chinese web series Go Princess Go, remains a notable example of high-concept historical comedy, eventually becoming available for streaming on Amazon Prime Video in late 2021.
