How a boating school teacher saved SpongeBob SquarePants from being cancelled before it began
In short: When Nickelodeon executives demanded SpongeBob be a child in school, creator Stephen Hillenburg nearly walked away. He refused to compromise his vision of an adult protagonist, until he invented Mrs. Puff. By placing SpongeBob in a boating school, Hillenburg satisfied the network while keeping his character an adult.
Mrs. Puff, an anthropomorphic pufferfish, was the final main character added to the cast during the development of SpongeBob SquarePants. Her creation was a strategic compromise; Hillenburg initially pitched SpongeBob as an adult, but network executives insisted on a school setting, citing the success of Hey Arnold!. Hillenburg’s solution was to make Mrs. Puff a boating instructor, allowing SpongeBob to remain an adult while attending her class. This addition was so pivotal that producers later credited her with saving the show from being abandoned during the pitching process.
The character’s design serves a dual purpose: she is a pufferfish who inflates when scared or when SpongeBob crashes, mimicking the function of a car’s airbag. This visual gag is central to her role as a teacher who is perpetually endangered by her most dedicated student. Because of a strict series rule, SpongeBob can never pass his driving test, ensuring Mrs. Puff remains a permanent fixture in his world. Consequently, any license he earns is always revoked or destroyed by the end of an episode.
Beyond the classroom, Mrs. Puff is defined by her temperamental personality and a surprisingly extensive criminal record, often landing in jail due to SpongeBob’s reckless driving. She is also one of the few characters to lead episodes from her own perspective, such as 'No Free Rides' and 'Doing Time.' Her personal life includes a romantic history with Mr. Krabs, who cares for her more than his own wealth. Voiced by Mary Jo Catlett since the show's inception, Mrs. Puff has transcended the screen to appear in theme parks, video games, and even road safety commercials, cementing her status as a pop culture icon.
