How a 1959 trade paper became the definitive pulse of the British music industry
In short: Music Week has evolved from a niche retail newsletter into the essential authority on UK music charts and industry trends. Through decades of acquisitions, digital pivots, and ownership shifts, it remains the primary trade publication for professionals, tracking everything from vinyl sales to the complexities of modern streaming data.
Originally launched in 1959 as Record Retailer, the publication underwent several identity shifts to mirror the changing landscape of the music business. It adopted the name Music Week in 1972, briefly pivoting to Music & Video Week in 1981 to capture the burgeoning home video market before reverting to its original title in 1983. Throughout the 1990s, it aggressively expanded its reach by absorbing rival titles like Record Business and incorporating Record Mirror, effectively consolidating the industry's trade intelligence under one banner.
The publication's history is marked by significant corporate transitions. In 2011, it was sold by UBM to Intent Media for £2.4 million as part of a larger package of media assets. Following subsequent acquisitions by NewBay Media in 2012 and Future in 2018, the magazine underwent a major structural change in March 2021, transitioning from a weekly print schedule to a monthly format. This shift aligned the publication with Future's other music-focused brands, such as Metal Hammer and Classic Rock.
Central to its legacy is the curation of the UK's Official Charts. While the magazine now features monthly chart summaries, its website continues to provide weekly analysis of singles and album performance. This analytical tradition has been maintained by industry experts like Alan Jones and James Masterton, who interpret the data behind the numbers. Even as print circulation declined from over 12,500 in the late 1990s to approximately 5,000 by 2011, the brand has successfully pivoted toward digital-first reporting, maintaining its status as the primary record of record for the British music industry.
