How a Japanese anime magazine took its name from a fictional evolutionary leap
In short: Launched in 1985, Newtype is a monthly Japanese publication that became a cornerstone of anime culture. Its title pays homage to the evolved humans in the Gundam franchise. Beyond its home market, the magazine spawned international editions, including a notable North American run that remains a sought-after collector's item today.
Kadokawa Shoten debuted Newtype on March 8, 1985, just one week after the premiere of the series Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam. The magazine’s name is a direct reference to the Newtypes, a group of genetically advanced humans central to the Universal Century timeline of the Gundam saga. Since its inception, the publication has served as a comprehensive guide to anime, manga, voice acting, and science fiction, consistently hitting newsstands on the 10th of every month.
The magazine is perhaps most famous in Japan for its long-running serialization of Mamoru Nagano’s epic, The Five Star Stories. Beyond manga, the publication has historically featured light novels, television schedules for upcoming anime and tokusatsu programs, and technical columns on digital illustration using software like Adobe Photoshop. Its back page has long served as a prestigious gallery for renowned illustrators, including Hajime Katoki, whose GUNDAM FIX series famously blended mecha designs with real-world photography.
Newtype’s influence extended globally through localized versions. Newtype USA, published by A.D. Vision between 2002 and 2008, blended translated Japanese content with original American reporting, interviews, and reviews. While it featured bonus material like DVDs and posters, it ceased operations in 2008. Meanwhile, Newtype Korea enjoyed a longer run from 1999 to 2015, integrating domestic South Korean animation alongside Japanese imports. These international editions highlight the magazine's role as a bridge between Japanese creators and a growing global audience of enthusiasts.
