Can a legendary nine-tailed fox find love without destroying the human she adores?
In short: In this South Korean romantic comedy, a college student accidentally releases a mythical fox from a painting. To survive a fatal fall, he accepts her mystical fox bead, binding their fates. As they fall in love, they discover a dark secret: her path to humanity requires his ultimate sacrifice.
My Girlfriend Is a Gumiho, a 2010 television series, reimagines the traditional Korean gumiho myth. Instead of the ferocious, liver-eating femme fatale of legend, the protagonist Mi-ho is a curious, childlike creature who has spent 500 years trapped in a painting. When Cha Dae-woong, an aspiring action star, inadvertently frees her, she saves his life by placing her fox bead—the source of her life energy—inside his body. This act creates an unlikely bond, as Dae-woong uses the bead's power to enhance his physical abilities while keeping Mi-ho's true identity hidden from the world.
The central conflict arises when a mysterious veterinarian named Park Dong-joo offers Mi-ho a way to become human. He instructs her to place her bead inside a human host for 100 days, during which time her supernatural energy will slowly dissipate. However, Dong-joo, a half-human being with a tragic past, deliberately hides the lethal consequence of this process: the human host will die once the 100 days conclude. As Mi-ho and Dae-woong grow closer, they unknowingly move toward a deadline that threatens to end one of their lives.
The series gained significant acclaim, becoming one of the most awarded South Korean dramas. Its popularity extended far beyond its initial 16-episode run on SBS, which aired from August 11 to September 30, 2010. By April 2016, the show had amassed over 180 million views on the Chinese streaming platform Youku, averaging 11 million views per episode. This success highlights the enduring appeal of the gumiho legend when blended with modern romantic tropes and high-stakes emotional dilemmas.
Beyond the central romance, the narrative explores themes of maturity and identity. Dae-woong's journey from a spoiled, aimless student to a responsible individual is catalyzed by his relationship with Mi-ho. Meanwhile, the show subverts expectations by portraying the legendary fox as a sympathetic figure, challenging the folklore that painted her as a monster. Through its blend of comedy, supernatural intrigue, and emotional stakes, the series remains a landmark in the genre.
