In short: In the anime My-HiME, twelve girls are marked with a mysterious power that allows them to summon Children—bizarre creatures that are part machine and part spirit. Tasked with defending humanity against monstrous Orphans, these students must navigate a dark destiny that challenges their loyalties, motivations, and the very nature of their reality.

Produced by Sunrise and directed by Masakazu Obara, My-HiME premiered on TV Tokyo in September 2004. The series centers on Mai Tokiha, a transfer student who arrives at the prestigious Fuuka Academy alongside her younger brother, Takumi. Mai soon discovers she is one of twelve chosen individuals bearing a Hime mark, a designation that grants her the ability to manifest photons and control a Child. These creatures serve as the primary defense against Orphans, aggressive entities that mirror the abilities of the Hime’s own summoned companions.

The narrative explores the complex dynamics between these twelve girls, each of whom possesses unique motivations for utilizing their powers. While some are driven by a desire to protect their friends and loved ones, others are more reluctant, caught between their personal responsibilities and the escalating conflict. As the Orphans grow more numerous and dangerous, the Himes realize that their struggle is not merely against these monsters, but against a deeper, more sinister secret regarding their ultimate destiny. This conflict forces characters like the serious Natsuki and the cat-like Mikoto to form unexpected alliances as the true nature of the academy's mysteries begins to unravel.

Creator Masakazu Obara intentionally designed the series to subvert traditional gender roles, placing actresses in the primary leading positions. This focus on female-led narratives extended beyond the original anime into a broader franchise, including the manga My-HiME EXA, which began serialization in 2010, and the light novel series My-HiME Destiny. The latter reimagines the core concepts of the original universe, replacing the Hime with psychic characters and MiKO. Throughout its history, the series has seen various international distributions, including releases by Bandai Entertainment and later Funimation, cementing its place in the landscape of mid-2000s Japanese animation.
