In short: Henry Durand returns home after three years to find his mother, Marty, radically transformed. She has shed significant weight and is dating younger men. But when she begins seeing a mysterious stranger, Henry’s protective instincts kick in, leading him into an absurd FBI surveillance operation involving his own mother.

Released in 2008 and directed by George Gallo, My Mom's New Boyfriend is a romantic comedy crime film featuring Colin Hanks, Antonio Banderas, Selma Blair, and Meg Ryan. While it received a limited theatrical run globally, Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions Group opted for a direct-to-DVD release in the United States on June 17, 2008. In certain international markets, including the UK and Australia, the production is known as My Spy.

The plot centers on Henry, an FBI agent who grew up caring for his mother after his father died in jail. Upon returning from a three-year assignment, he finds Marty has reinvented herself after a humiliating encounter where a stranger mistook her for a homeless person. Henry, now engaged to fellow agent Emily, struggles to accept his mother's newfound social life. His discomfort turns to professional obsession when he learns that Marty’s new suitor, Tommy, is suspected of planning a museum heist.

Forced by his superiors to monitor his mother under threat of reassignment to Alaska, Henry endures the awkwardness of eavesdropping on their private moments. The tension peaks when Tommy is betrayed by his criminal associates during the heist. It is revealed that Tommy is actually Tomas Martinez, a CIA operative working undercover to stop an art theft ring funding terrorism. The film concludes with a rescue mission at the Durand home, where the gang is apprehended, and the romantic pairings of Marty and Tommy, and Henry and Emily, are solidified.
