Can a mother’s lethal survival skills protect the daughter she was forced to abandon?
In short: In this Netflix action thriller, a former military operative emerges from deep isolation to rescue the child she gave up for adoption. As she faces her past, she must transform her daughter from a civilian into a survivor, navigating a high-stakes game of vengeance against dangerous former associates.
Directed by Niki Caro and released on May 12, 2023, The Mother stars Jennifer Lopez as a nameless U.S. military operative who becomes an FBI informant after discovering her criminal partners, Adrian Lovell and Hector Álvarez, are involved in child trafficking. Following a violent confrontation that leaves her wounded and her FBI contact, William Cruise, injured, she gives birth prematurely. To protect her daughter, Zoe, she relinquishes her parental rights and retreats to a remote Alaskan cabin, setting three conditions for the child's safety: an ordinary life, annual photos, and a direct line for emergencies.
Twelve years later, the past catches up when Álvarez’s men kidnap Zoe to lure the Mother out of hiding. The narrative shifts into a global rescue mission, moving from Ohio to Havana, Cuba. After rescuing Zoe, the Mother realizes the girl is never truly safe, leading her to bring Zoe to the Alaskan wilderness. There, the film pivots into a survivalist drama as the Mother trains the reluctant teenager in self-defense and combat. The climax pits them against Lovell and his mercenaries, forcing Zoe to choose between her former life and the lethal skills her mother provides.
The film’s production was marked by the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, with filming beginning in Vancouver in October 2021 before being suspended in January 2022 due to the Omicron variant. Subsequent scenes were shot in Gran Canaria, Spain, which doubled for Cuba. Upon release, the film saw significant viewership, with Samba TV reporting 2.8 million U.S. households watching during its debut weekend. Despite its commercial success and status as one of Netflix’s most-watched movies, critical reception was mixed, with Rotten Tomatoes reporting a 43% approval rating and critics noting a reliance on genre clichés.
