How a five-minute viral short film became a supernatural feature-length horror movie
In short: In 2014, Bryce McGuire released a brief, viral horror short about a backyard pool. A decade later, he expanded that concept into a feature film, Night Swim. Produced by Blumhouse and Atomic Monster, the movie explores the terrifying idea that a suburban swimming pool might harbor an ancient, malevolent entity.
The journey of Night Swim began in 2014 when Bryce McGuire and Rod Blackhurst created a five-minute short film in a backyard. The project went viral on YouTube, catching the attention of Atomic Monster executive Judson Scott, who recommended it to James Wan. This led to a feature-length adaptation, which McGuire wrote and directed, aiming to blend supernatural mythology with a gothic fairytale undercurrent. The film stars Wyatt Russell and Kerry Condon as parents who move into a house with a self-sustaining pool, unaware that it is powered by an ancient pagan healing spring that demands human sacrifice.
Production was a logistical challenge, as McGuire insisted on filming wet-for-wet rather than relying on computer-generated water. Principal photography took 34 days in 2023, utilizing both a residential pool in Altadena and a 13-foot-deep Olympic-sized pool in Chatsworth. To heighten the sense of dread, the crew used older, wider lenses to make the backyard pool appear as vast and intimidating as the ocean. The score, composed by Mark Korven, was designed to evoke the sound of a drowned choir rising from the depths, complementing the film's 1980s-inspired soundtrack.
Upon its release on January 5, 2024, the film received mixed to negative reviews. Critics like Frank Scheck labeled it the shallow end of the horror pool, while others, such as Alissa Wilkinson, acknowledged its ability to provide standard winter horror thrills despite a goofy third act. Commercially, the film grossed $54.8 million worldwide against its opening weekend projections. Ultimately, the project serves as a case study in the challenges of stretching a high-concept short into a full-length feature, with many critics noting that the original short film remained the more effective, shocking iteration of the premise.
