How a low-budget, ridiculed animated film became a massive Chinese box office sensation
In short: Niu Lai, a 2026 Chinese animated film, began as a project created with second-hand hardware and architectural software. After initial box office sales were abysmal, the film’s notoriously poor animation sparked viral mockery on social media, transforming it into an unlikely sleeper hit with millions in revenue.
Directed by Xin Yumeng and written by Sun Lifang, Niu Lai was produced by a former interior design company, Dalian Jingyuan Culture Film and Television Media. The production was a true family affair, with the mother-son duo serving as the sole crew members and voice actors. Lacking specialized animation tools, they utilized SketchUp—a program designed for architectural modeling—to build their world. The film’s aesthetic was so unconventional that critics compared its visuals to Microsoft PowerPoint presentations and the early computer-generated imagery of the 1980s.
The film’s journey to success was anything but conventional. After its August 5, 2026, premiere, it was pulled from most theaters within nine days due to poor performance. However, as clips of the animation circulated online, the public’s ridicule turned into a cult following. Audiences flocked to theaters to witness the bizarre, sluggish dialogue and off-key lip-syncing. By August 15, daily screenings surged from 21 to 359, and the film eventually grossed over $9 million. This performance secured its place among China’s top ten highest-grossing animated films of 2026.
While some critics, such as those at The Beijing News, argued the film lowered the bar for cinematic standards, others saw deeper cultural significance. Animation director Zhou Shengwei likened its trajectory to cult classics like The Room, while the BBC noted that viewers seemed to prefer the film’s visibly human-made, albeit low-quality, animation over the polished output of modern artificial intelligence. Despite the mockery, the film’s massive return on investment highlights a unique moment where viral social media discourse can override traditional critical reception, turning a technical failure into a commercial phenomenon.
