In short: Nimona was nearly lost forever when Disney shuttered Blue Sky Studios in 2021. Despite being 70% complete, the project faced cancellation due to its LGBTQ themes. Miraculously, Annapurna Pictures and Netflix revived the film, allowing this visually distinct, rock-inspired fantasy to finally reach audiences and earn widespread critical acclaim.

Originally developed by Blue Sky Studios, Nimona was intended for a 2020 release. The production faced multiple delays following Disney's acquisition of 21st Century Fox. By the time Disney announced the closure of Blue Sky in April 2021, the film was approximately 70% through its layout phase. Staffers reported that Disney leadership had pushed back against the project's queer themes, including a same-sex kiss between the lead characters, Ballister Boldheart and Ambrosius Goldenloin.

The revival began when Annapurna Pictures and Netflix intervened. Annapurna CEO Megan Ellison, who identified with the film's LGBTQ elements, encouraged the creative team to embrace them. Directors Nick Bruno and Troy Quane, who had been involved with the project at Blue Sky, returned to finish the work. While DNEG Animation had to rebuild production pipelines and switch to Pixar's RenderMan engine, about 90% of the original story remained intact. The final product serves as a testament to the original team, with the end credits honoring the entire Blue Sky staff.

Visually, the film blends medieval and futuristic aesthetics, drawing inspiration from artists Eyvind Earle and Charley Harper. The character designs utilize specific geometric motifs: circles represent the fluid, shapeshifting Nimona, squares define the traditionalist Ballister, and diamonds signify the rigid Institute. This stylistic choice mirrors the film's thematic exploration of identity and tradition. Upon its 2023 release, the film was nominated for Best Animated Feature at the Academy Awards, Annie Awards, and Critics' Choice Awards, proving that its unique vision resonated far beyond its troubled production history.
