How a Lie About Screenwriting Skills Launched a Cult Martial Arts Classic
In short: In 1985, an aspiring actor named Keith W. Strandberg bluffed his way into a screenwriting gig for a Hong Kong studio. The result was No Retreat, No Surrender, a film that introduced the world to Jean-Claude Van Damme and became a bizarre, enduring piece of martial arts cinema history.
The film emerged from a collaboration between Hong Kong’s Seasonal Film Corporation and the American firm Balcor Films. Screenwriter Keith W. Strandberg, who had been seeking acting work, convinced studio head Ng See-yuen that he was a capable writer despite having no experience. Strandberg spent the production period frantically revising the script on set each night to keep up with filming requirements. The final product, directed by Corey Yuen, follows a young karate student who seeks guidance from the spirit of Bruce Lee to defeat a ruthless Soviet fighter.
Jean-Claude Van Damme was cast as the antagonist, Ivan Kraschinsky, in one of his earliest roles. The production was marked by tension; while some performers felt Van Damme was professional, others, including actor Timothy Baker, reported that the future star ignored director Corey Yuen’s instructions to avoid making physical contact during fight scenes. Van Damme’s performance, however, became a highlight for many viewers, with critics later praising his signature high-kicks and intensity, even as the film itself faced harsh reviews for its derivative plot.
Upon its 1986 release, the movie was widely panned by critics who compared it unfavorably to hits like The Karate Kid and Rocky IV. Despite being labeled an amateurish effort by reviewers in The New York Times and the Los Angeles Times, it found a dedicated audience. The film exists in two distinct versions: an international cut and a shorter American edit that removed several comedic sequences. Over time, it has transitioned from a box-office curiosity into a cult favorite, eventually being featured in live riffing tours and receiving a 2017 Blu-ray release.
