How Danny Ocean’s crew orchestrated a high-stakes heist to bankrupt a Las Vegas mogul
In short: In the 2007 heist comedy Ocean’s Thirteen, Danny Ocean gathers his crew to destroy casino mogul Willy Bank. After Bank swindles their friend Reuben Tishkoff, the team executes a complex plan to rig every game, sabotage the hotel's security, and steal a private diamond collection on the casino's grand opening night.
Directed by Steven Soderbergh, the film serves as the third installment in the Ocean’s trilogy. The plot centers on the revenge of Danny Ocean and his associates against Willy Bank, who forced Reuben Tishkoff to sign over his ownership stake in a new Las Vegas hotel, causing Tishkoff to suffer a heart attack. To ruin Bank, the crew aims to prevent his hotel from winning the prestigious Five Diamond Award and force the casino into financial collapse by rigging games to pay out millions in winnings.
The heist faces significant technical hurdles, including the Greco, an advanced artificial intelligence system designed to monitor biometric responses and detect cheating. To bypass this, the team utilizes a magnetron disguised as a cell phone and simulates a massive earthquake to evacuate the casino. When their primary drilling equipment fails, they are forced to secure funding from their former rival, Terry Benedict. Benedict agrees to finance the operation in exchange for the theft of Bank’s private diamond collection, which celebrates his previous Five Diamond awards.
The production of the film was a massive undertaking, involving location shoots in Las Vegas and Los Angeles, including the Bellagio and the Palazzo. Despite the absence of key cast members from previous films, such as Julia Roberts and Catherine Zeta-Jones, the movie achieved commercial success, grossing $312 million worldwide. Critics offered mixed to positive reviews, with some praising the film's visual style and editing, while others argued it prioritized star personas over character development. Ultimately, the crew succeeds in their mission, leaving Bank financially ruined and unable to retaliate due to his own illicit business practices.
