In short: October Sky tells the story of Homer Hickam, a coal miner's son who finds inspiration in the 1957 launch of Sputnik. While the film is a fictionalized account of his life, it left a real-world legacy, famously inspiring Jeff Bezos to pursue his own ambitions in the private aerospace industry.

The 1999 biographical drama October Sky, directed by Joe Johnston, is based on the 1998 memoir Rocket Boys by Homer H. Hickam Jr. The film chronicles the efforts of a group of teenagers in Coalwood, West Virginia, who, inspired by the Soviet Union's launch of Sputnik 1 in October 1957, begin building their own rockets. Despite the skepticism of his father, a coal mine manager, and various local obstacles, the protagonist eventually succeeds in his scientific pursuits, leading to a career at NASA.

While the film is celebrated for its portrayal of 1950s Appalachia, it takes significant creative liberties with the source material. In reality, there were six 'rocket boys' rather than four, and the protagonist never dropped out of high school to work in the mines, nor did he have to prove his innocence regarding a wildfire as depicted on screen. Furthermore, the film's title was a marketing decision; Universal Studios feared that the original title, Rocket Boys, would fail to attract female audiences over thirty. The name is an anagram of the original book title.

The film's cultural impact extends beyond its $34.7 million worldwide gross. Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon, reportedly viewed the film in 1999 and discussed his long-held interest in space with science fiction writer Neal Stephenson. This conversation served as a catalyst for Bezos to establish Blue Origin, his private aerospace manufacturing company, with Stephenson joining as an early employee. Today, the story remains a touchstone for inspiration, with annual festivals held in both Coalwood and the Tennessee locations where the film was shot.
