A biographical drama about elite firefighters that ironically cost more than it earned
In short: The 2017 film Only the Brave chronicles the tragic 2013 Yarnell Hill Fire, which claimed the lives of 19 Granite Mountain Hotshots. While the production earned critical acclaim for its respectful portrayal of these municipal heroes, it suffered a massive financial loss, compounded by a staggering legal payout to a crew member.
Directed by Joseph Kosinski, the film depicts the journey of the Granite Mountain Hotshots, an elite Prescott, Arizona, firefighting crew. The narrative follows superintendent Eric Marsh as he fights to secure municipal certification for his team, eventually leading them to battle the Yarnell Hill Fire. The film highlights the intense bond between the men, including the story of Brendan McDonough, the sole survivor of the tragedy. To prepare for their roles, the ensemble cast, including Josh Brolin and Miles Teller, underwent rigorous firefighter training.
While the film received positive reviews for its emotional weight and performances, it struggled significantly at the box office. Produced on a $38 million budget, it grossed approximately $25.8 million worldwide. Its financial woes were further exacerbated in 2022 when a cameraman, James Razo, won a $60 million settlement following severe injuries sustained during production—a payout more than double the film's total global box office revenue.
The film takes several creative liberties for dramatic effect. For instance, the depiction of McDonough being bitten by a rattlesnake, which supposedly influenced his placement as a lookout, is fictional; in reality, he was on lookout duty due to illness. Similarly, the film portrays families learning of the tragedy in a middle school gymnasium, whereas in reality, they were notified through social media or personal connections. Critics like Richard Brody noted that while the film excels at detailing the firefighters' professional lives, it misses the opportunity to explore the complex aftermath, including the struggles of widows who faced public harassment after challenging local authorities regarding survivor benefits.
Despite these departures from reality, the film is dedicated to the 19 fallen firefighters. The Yarnell Hill Fire remains the deadliest day for firefighters since the September 11 attacks. The production, originally titled Granite Mountain, remains a somber tribute, blending practical effects and CGI to capture the harrowing nature of the work performed by these everyday heroes.
