Can a simulated dream ever replace the reality of a life once lived?
In short: Alejandro Amenábar’s 1997 psychological thriller explores the blurred lines between memory, desire, and digital existence. When a wealthy playboy faces a disfiguring accident, he discovers his reality is a manufactured dream provided by a cryonics firm. The film forces a choice: return to a perfect illusion or face an uncertain future.
Directed by Alejandro Amenábar and co-written with Mateo Gil, Open Your Eyes follows César, a man whose life of privilege is shattered by a car crash. After his obsessive ex-lover Nuria drives them off a hill, César is left with severe facial disfigurement. The narrative shifts between his time in jail, where he recounts his story to a forensic psychologist, and his struggle to distinguish his waking life from a deteriorating, dream-like simulation.
The mystery deepens when César discovers his reality is managed by Life Extension, a company that preserves the bodies of the deceased and places their minds into a simulated dream based on their happiest memories. His nightmare begins when his subconscious trauma over his disfigurement causes the software to malfunction. The film, which draws thematic comparisons to the 1635 play Life Is a Dream, suggests that the boundary between human consciousness and artificial intelligence is dangerously thin.
The climax presents a stark existential dilemma: remain in a corrected simulation of 1997 or wake up in 2145, where medical technology can finally restore his physical body. Despite the film's critical acclaim—including an 87% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes—Amenábar later expressed regret, calling it his worst work because he felt he lacked life experience when he wrote it as a teenager. The film’s success led to the 2001 American remake, Vanilla Sky, which relocated the story from Madrid to New York City.
