In short: Orrin Hatch became a cornerstone of American conservatism, serving as a U.S. senator for over four decades. From fighting as an amateur boxer to navigating the most contentious tax reforms in history, his career was defined by a steady, often polarizing, commitment to traditional values and legislative endurance.

Born in 1934 in a Pennsylvania suburb, Orrin Hatch grew up in poverty and was the first in his family to attend college. His early life was marked by hardship; he lived in a refurbished chicken coop during law school and was profoundly affected by the death of his brother, a nose turret gunner killed in action over Germany in 1945. These experiences shaped a politician who would later champion conservative causes and fiscal responsibility.

Hatch entered the U.S. Senate in 1977, representing Utah. He became a prominent voice for conservative values, proposing a constitutional amendment to ban abortion in 1977 and voting against the Equal Rights Amendment in 1982. He also played a major role in drafting the USA PATRIOT Act following the September 11 attacks and worked on a proposed constitutional amendment to make flag burning illegal, which failed by a single vote in 2006.

Despite his conservative reputation, Hatch was known for bipartisan work and occasional deviations from the party line. He was the only Republican to support federal funding for AIDS education in 1988 and co-formulated the DREAM Act in 2001 with Democrat Dick Durbin. He also became a rare Republican advocate for stem cell research, praising President Obama for lifting the federal funding ban in 2009. His career culminated in 2017 with the passage of a sweeping tax-overhaul bill, which he co-wrote and helped oversee.

Hatch served as president pro tempore of the Senate from 2015 to 2019. He retired in 2019 after 42 years of service, a tenure that made him the longest-serving Republican senator in history until being surpassed by Chuck Grassley in 2023. He was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2018.
