A Case of Mistaken Identity: When a Grizzly Bear Joins the Circus
In short: In the third installment of the Open Season franchise, Boog the grizzly bear finds himself in a bizarre predicament. After swapping places with a lookalike circus performer named Doug, Boog discovers a new world of tightropes and juggling, while his forest friends scramble to save him from a Russian troupe.
Directed by Cody Cameron and released in 2011, Open Season 3 follows Boog as he seeks connection after his best friend, the mule deer Elliot, prioritizes his growing family. During a solo excursion, Boog encounters the Maslova Family Circus and meets Doug, a self-centered grizzly who despises his performance duties. Doug orchestrates a switch, intending to trade his circus life for the perceived freedom of the forest, while Boog is left to navigate the complexities of circus life and his budding romance with Ursa, a talented Russian bear.
The narrative explores themes of belonging and identity as Boog adapts to the circus environment. Unlike the mean-spirited Doug, Boog’s polite demeanor and ability to perform tricks—such as riding a unicycle—eventually win over Ursa. Meanwhile, back in the forest, Elliot and a group of pets, including Mr. Weenie, uncover Doug’s deception and launch a rescue mission. The conflict resolves when Doug returns to the circus, allowing Ursa to join Boog in the wild, where she becomes his mate.
Critical reception for the film was largely unfavorable. Reviewers noted that the plot felt formulaic, often rehashing beats from the original movie. Critics also pointed to a decline in animation quality compared to earlier entries, with some comparing the visuals to low-budget television productions or video games. Despite the negative feedback, the film remains a notable chapter in the series, which continued with later installments like 2015's Open Season: Scared Silly.
The production, handled by Reel FX Creative Studios, saw a direct-to-home media release in the United States on January 25, 2011. While it struggled to impress critics, the film serves as a bridge in the franchise, shifting the focus from the initial forest dynamics to a broader exploration of the characters' personal lives and the introduction of new companions like the camelid Alistair.
