How a failed blockbuster became a $100 million horror hit despite critical panning
In short: The 2014 film Ouija survived a chaotic production that saw its budget slashed, its script overhauled, and half its footage reshot. Despite being panned by critics, the supernatural horror movie defied expectations to gross over $100 million worldwide, proving that atmospheric scares can sometimes outweigh a troubled development history.
The journey of Ouija began in 2008 as a high-budget, four-quadrant adventure intended to mirror the scale of films like The Mummy. By 2012, however, Universal Pictures abandoned the project after a draft by Simon Kinberg ballooned to a $125 million production cost. The studio eventually reconfigured the film, bringing in Jason Blum of Blumhouse Productions to oversee a more intimate, atmospheric, and cost-effective approach with a modest $5 million budget.
Production was far from smooth. Principal photography occurred between December 2013 and January 2014, but a poor test screening led to massive reshoots in May 2014. According to star Olivia Cooke, these reshoots replaced nearly half the film. The changes were extensive: Erin Moriarty’s character was cut entirely, Lin Shaye was added, and the visual design of the antagonist, Doris Zander, was shifted from a burnt appearance to a rotting, stitched-mouth aesthetic. Mike Flanagan, who later directed the 2016 prequel Ouija: Origin of Evil, contributed ideas during this period, noting the film’s long post-production phase.
When Universal finally released the film on October 24, 2014, it debuted at number one in North America, earning nearly $20 million in its opening weekend. While Rotten Tomatoes critics gave it a dismal 6% approval rating, the film ultimately reached a worldwide total of $103,674,010. The success of the low-budget model paved the way for the 2016 prequel, which received significantly better reviews, proving that even a critically maligned start can spawn a viable franchise.
