The criminal who never finds God or a conscience
In short: Most anti-heroes eventually soften, but Parker remains chillingly consistent. Created by Donald E. Westlake under the pseudonym Richard Stark, Parker is a professional robber who refuses to develop a conscience, find religion, or turn into a government agent. He is a study in pure, methodical antisocial behavior.
Westlake crafted the Richard Stark persona as a 'mirror image' of his own writing. While his usual prose was 'rococo', the Stark style was 'crisp and lean'—stripping sentences to the essentials. This mirrors Parker himself: a man who avoids social pleasantries and possesses a 'cold, methodical, and humorless' demeanor. He is a 'blank' human, stripped to the essentials of survival and profit.
Parker remains a durable literary figure by refusing a typical 'redemption arc'. Critic Lawrence Block noted that Westlake succeeded because he understood that a 'mellow Parker is no Parker at all'. He never finds a moral compass; instead, he operates in a world of crime, a 'freebooter' who acquires money solely to buy 'vegetative quiet', viewing society as indifferent as the weather.
The narrative structure reinforces this isolation. Westlake often used a four-section format: the first two sections focus on Parker’s meticulous planning, while the third shifts to his opponents. This highlights the contrast between Parker's singular focus and the greed of 'marginal elements'. Despite his ruthlessness, Parker is often sympathetic because he is surrounded by criminals even more violent than himself, rarely initiating force except in self-defence.
