A therapist counsels survivors of a plane crash, but the truth is far stranger
In short: In the 2008 thriller Passengers, Claire Summers is tasked with helping five plane crash survivors process their trauma. As she investigates their conflicting memories of an engine explosion, she uncovers a reality that defies logic. The film explores the boundary between life and death through a haunting, supernatural lens.
Directed by Rodrigo García and written by Ronnie Christensen, the 2008 film Passengers follows psychotherapist Claire Summers, played by Anne Hathaway, as she treats five survivors of a tragic plane crash. Her patients—Dean, Norman, Shannon, Eric, and a flight attendant named Janice—each grapple with the event in different ways. While an airline official named Mr. Arkin insists the disaster was caused by pilot error, the survivors begin to report unsettling, inconsistent memories, including visions of an engine explosion and sightings of figures from their pasts.
As Claire grows closer to Eric, played by Patrick Wilson, she finds herself entangled in a web of conspiracy theories and personal discovery. Her investigation leads her to a shocking revelation: a ledger found in Arkin’s briefcase lists all the passengers who died in the crash, including Claire herself. The film ultimately reveals that the survivors are deceased, and their experiences are part of a process to help them understand and accept their deaths. Figures in Claire's life, such as her neighbor Toni and her supervisor Perry, are revealed to be deceased individuals sent to guide her through this transition.
The film, which features a score by Edward Shearmur, struggled to find critical favor. Upon its October 24, 2008 release in the United States and Canada, it earned $173,544 during its opening weekend in 125 theaters, eventually grossing over $5.7 million globally. Critics were largely unimpressed, with Rotten Tomatoes reporting a 19% approval rating from 31 reviews and Metacritic assigning a score of 40 out of 100. While reviewers like Manohla Dargis praised the performances of Hathaway and Wilson, many pointed to the film's uneven direction and pacing as significant flaws.
