In short: Director Bille August turned a beloved 1906 novel into a cinematic masterpiece, casting an 11-year-old boy who shared his character's name. With a massive budget and a haunting performance by Max von Sydow, the film captured the harsh realities of immigrant life and earned the prestigious Palme d'Or.

Released in 1987, Pelle the Conqueror is a co-production between Denmark and Sweden that adapts the first volume of Martin Andersen Nexø’s four-part novel. Director Bille August sought to create an epic, focusing on the story of Lasse Karlsson and his son, Pelle, who emigrate from Skåne, Sweden, to the Danish island of Bornholm in the late 1850s. The narrative follows their struggle for survival as they toil under a tyrannical farm manager, capturing a stark, detailed panorama of impoverished life.

The production was a significant undertaking for the region, with a budget of $4.5 million secured from Danish and Swedish film institutes, making it one of the most costly Scandinavian films of its time. Filming spanned nearly six months over a year, with production designer Anna Asp intentionally crafting the farm’s interior to evoke a prison-like atmosphere. The casting process was equally rigorous; August auditioned 3,000 children before selecting 11-year-old Pelle Hvenegaard, who was coincidentally named after the book's protagonist—a common occurrence in Denmark due to the novel's enduring popularity.

The film’s critical reception was stellar, winning the Palme d'Or at the 1988 Cannes Film Festival and the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. It also earned Max von Sydow his first Academy Award nomination for Best Actor. While some critics, such as Peter Travers, found the film mediocre, others like Roger Ebert and Vincent Canby praised its emotional power and historical detail. The film’s success was so profound that legendary director Ingmar Bergman reportedly watched it seven times, eventually selecting August to direct his own script, The Best Intentions.
