A brutal 18th-century struggle for land and nobility in the harsh Danish moorlands
In short: In 1755, an impoverished Danish captain attempts the impossible: cultivating the barren Jutland moorland to earn a noble title. His ambition triggers a violent feud with a ruthless local magistrate, sparking a desperate battle for survival, status, and humanity in this epic historical drama starring Mads Mikkelsen.
Directed by Nikolaj Arcel and based on Ida Jessen’s 2020 novel, The Promised Land follows Captain Ludvig Kahlen, a retired officer seeking to tame the unforgiving Jutland wilderness. Kahlen’s quest for a manor and noble title is immediately challenged by Frederik Schinkel, a sadistic magistrate determined to monopolize the region. The conflict escalates as Kahlen defies social norms by employing runaway serfs and Romani travellers, forming an unconventional family unit while struggling against the elements.
The film’s narrative is defined by the stark contrast between Kahlen’s disciplined, agrarian ambition and Schinkel’s unchecked cruelty. After a successful potato harvest earns Kahlen the title of Royal Surveyor and a influx of German settlers, Schinkel retaliates with lethal force. The ensuing cycle of violence leads to Kahlen’s arrest and torture, only resolved through the intervention of Ann Barbara and Edel Helene, who orchestrate a lethal strike against the magistrate. The film explores themes of class, power, and the high cost of personal legacy.
Premiering at the 80th Venice International Film Festival in 2023, the film received widespread critical acclaim, holding a 97% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics have praised its blend of epic Nordic storytelling with the structural tropes of a Western. Beyond its historical setting, the film examines the fragility of social advancement and the moral compromises required to survive in a landscape where both the terrain and the ruling class are equally hostile.
Production spanned Germany, Sweden, and Czechia, with principal photography occurring between September and November 2022. The film’s 127-minute runtime captures a sweeping arc from Kahlen’s initial poverty to his eventual abandonment of his hard-won title. By the story's end, the captain chooses freedom over the rigid hierarchies that once defined his life, riding toward the sea with Ann Barbara, leaving the moor and his noble aspirations behind.
