How Disney+ transformed Rick Riordan’s legendary demigod saga into a prestige television event
In short: Percy Jackson and the Olympians brings the beloved fantasy book series to life through a faithful, critically acclaimed adaptation. Starring Walker Scobell as the titular demigod, the series navigates the perils of Olympus, ancient prophecies, and the complex relationships between gods and mortals across three expansive, high-stakes television seasons.
Created by Rick Riordan and Jonathan E. Steinberg, the series began development in May 2020 following a direct pitch to Disney Branded Television. The production, filmed in Vancouver, prioritizes fidelity to the source material, a choice that has earned significant praise from critics. The show's first season, which aired from December 2023 to January 2024, adapts the inaugural novel, The Lightning Thief, establishing the core trio of Percy, Annabeth Chase, and Grover Underwood.
The narrative expands significantly in subsequent seasons. The second season, released between December 2025 and January 2026, follows Percy’s quest for the Golden Fleece, while the third season—slated for November 2026—tackles The Titan's Curse. The series is noted for its nuanced character portrayals, such as the decision to tone down the abusive behavior of Percy’s stepfather, Gabe Ugliano, to avoid creating a horror-adjacent tone. Similarly, the character Chiron, played by Glynn Turman, features a deliberate change to his physical portrayal, incorporating a war injury to address his disability.
Critical reception has been strong, with the series securing eight of sixteen Children's and Family Emmy Award nominations. Beyond the leading performances, the show features an expansive cast of mythological figures, including Lin-Manuel Miranda as Hermes and Jason Mantzoukas as a curmudgeonly Dionysus. As the series progresses, it balances the high-fantasy stakes of Kronos’s rising forces with the personal growth of its young protagonists, particularly as Percy grapples with the weight of the Great Prophecy.
