In short: While the Percy Jackson film duology became a global box office success, its creator, Rick Riordan, famously stayed away from the screen. He chose to remain blind to the adaptations to protect his original vision of the characters from being altered by the Hollywood lens.

The Percy Jackson film series, distributed by 2/20th Century Fox, consists of two installments: The Lightning Thief, released on February 12, 2010, and Sea of Monsters, released on August 7, 2013. The first film, directed by Chris Columbus, follows sixteen-year-old Percy Jackson as he discovers his lineage as the son of Poseidon. After being accused of stealing Zeus's lightning bolt, Percy embarks on a quest across America to rescue his mother from the underworld. The production of this first installment began in Vancouver during April 2009. This follows a period where 20th Century Fox secured the rights to the books in June 2004.

The second film, directed by Thor Freudenthal, follows Percy as he seeks the Golden Fleece within the Sea of Monsters—identified as the Bermuda Triangle—to protect the magical tree at Camp Half-Blood. Despite the series grossing nearly $430 million worldwide, the films faced significant criticism for deviating from Rick Riordan's novels. The sequel, in particular, was noted for merging plot elements from the second and fifth books of the series. The plot of the sequel introduces Percy's half-brother, a Cyclops named Tyson. This mission is essential because the camp's borders rely on a tree that holds the spirit of Thalia Grace.

The relationship between the author and the production was notably strained. Riordan has stated he never watched the films to avoid letting them influence his perception of his characters. In 2018, he even shared emails expressing his concerns regarding how the producers altered his stories. This lack of influence stands in stark contrast to the Disney+ television series, which premiered on December 19, 2023, and features Riordan and his wife, Becky, as active participants in its development. In March 2016, the author even requested that educators refrain from screening these movies in classrooms. This new era of adaptation began production in June 2022.
