In short: In the village of Kathikera, a group of women is dismantling centuries of stigma surrounding menstruation. By operating a local factory to produce affordable, biodegradable sanitary pads, they are not only improving feminine hygiene but also securing their economic future and challenging deep-seated cultural taboos in their community.

The 2018 documentary short Period. End of Sentence. chronicles this transformation in the Hapur district, located 60 km from Delhi. For generations, the absence of accessible sanitary products led to significant health complications and forced many young girls to abandon their education due to frequent school absences. The film highlights how the introduction of a pad-making machine became a catalyst for change, allowing local women to take control of their health and livelihoods.

The project was inspired by the work of Arunachalam Muruganantham, a social activist based in Coimbatore. By teaching the women of Kathikera to manufacture and distribute their own products, the initiative fostered a sense of agency that extended beyond simple hygiene. The women chose the brand name FLY for their venture, symbolizing their collective desire for women to rise above the pervasive shame that has historically defined the menstrual experience in their region.

The film, directed by Rayka Zehtabchi, has received significant recognition for its portrayal of this grassroots movement. It secured the Academy Award for Best Documentary (Short Subject) at the 91st Academy Awards and earned accolades at various qualifying festivals, including the Cleveland International Film Festival and AFI Fest. While the film holds a 75% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, its true impact lies in the tangible shift in the daily lives of the women it features, as they continue to navigate and reshape the social landscape of their community.
