From medical school to a global crown, one woman's vision for health
In short: Manushi Chhillar didn't just win a beauty pageant; she leveraged it into a multi-million dollar humanitarian campaign. Before becoming Miss World 2017, she was an academically brilliant student pursuing a medical degree—a background that would eventually shape her mission to address menstrual hygiene across continents.
Born in Rohtak to parents who are both medical doctors, Manushi Chhillar's path was defined by academic rigor. She topped the all-India CBSE in English during her 12th grade with a score of 96 percent and cleared the All India Pre Medical Test on her first attempt. While she was pursuing an MBBS degree at Bhagat Phool Singh Medical College, she balanced her studies with training as a Kuchipudi dancer and entered the world of pageantry in 2016.
Chhillar's ascent to the Miss World title in November 2017 marked her as the sixth Indian woman to hold the crown. However, her impact was measured by her 'Beauty with a Purpose' project, titled Project Shakti. This initiative focused on menstrual hygiene awareness and accessibility. Her advocacy gained significant institutional weight when she secured ₹18 crore (approximately $2.8 million) in government aid from the Haryana state government to provide free sanitary napkins in government schools.
The scope of her work was vast, involving a 42-day global tour. She visited villages to treat over 5,000 women and collaborated with NGOs like Aakar Innovations to create low-cost, biodegradable pads. Her journey took her from the slums of Kolkata and Mumbai to high-level meetings with world leaders, including the Vice-President of India. By combining her medical background with a global platform, she transitioned from a pageant winner to a recognized advocate for public health and women's empowerment.
Beyond hygiene, Chhillar used her platform to address diverse issues, such as leprosy prevention in Brazil and supporting children with Down syndrome. Her career serves as a case study in how personal academic foundations—specifically her interest in medicine—can be synthesized with celebrity influence to create scalable social change.
