The only actor to appear in every single Spooks episode
In short: Most actors rotate in and out of long-running dramas, but Peter Firth achieved a rare feat of consistency. For ten years, he remained the constant face of British espionage, anchoring a series that defined a generation of television drama.
Born in Bradford in 1953, Peter Firth established himself as a leading child actor by the mid-1960s. He starred in early series like The Flaxton Boys and Here Come the Double Deckers! before transitioning to adult roles in the 1970s. His early career was marked by significant stage and screen work, including a notable appearance in the 1973 stage version of Peter Shaffer's Equus at Laurence Olivier's National Theatre.
Firth's career reached a major milestone in 1977 with the film adaptation of Equus. His performance as Alan Strang earned him a Golden Globe Award and an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor. During the Broadway run of the play, he lived with the writer Peter Shaffer, developing a close father-son relationship. This period of his career also saw him working with high-profile directors like Roman Polanski on the 1979 film Tess.
In the 21st century, Firth became a staple of BBC television. From 2002 to 2011, he played the primary role of Sir Harry Pearce in the spy drama Spooks. He holds the distinction of being the only actor to appear in every episode across the show's ten-series lifespan. Beyond espionage, his diverse credits range from portraying the Emperor Vespasian in Ancient Rome to narrating literary classics like Aldous Huxley's Brave New World.
His enduring career is recognized by the University of Bradford, which awarded him an honorary Doctor of Letters in 2009 for his services to acting. While he is often associated with the stoic world of MI5, his filmography reflects a versatile range, spanning science fiction, historical dramas like Victoria, and period pieces like Northanger Abbey.
