From hospital lab assistant to Britain's most iconic grumpy pensioner
In short: Born Iain Carmichael Wilson, this Scottish actor spent his early years working in a medical laboratory before pivoting to the stage at age 27. Though he became a household name playing a perpetually disgruntled retiree, he famously grew to despise his character's signature catchphrase, eventually refusing to utter it publicly.
Born in Greenock in 1936, Richard Wilson initially pursued a path in science, working as a research assistant at Glasgow's Stobhill Hospital. His transition to the arts began in his late twenties when he enrolled at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London, graduating in 1965. His early career was defined by repertory theatre work across Edinburgh, Glasgow, and Manchester, establishing a foundation that would eventually lead him to television prominence.
Wilson is best remembered for his portrayal of the irascible Victor Meldrew in a popular BBC sitcom. The role was not his immediate choice; he initially declined the part, which was nearly offered to Les Dawson before Wilson reconsidered. The character's catchphrase became a cultural phenomenon, yet Wilson developed such a strong aversion to the line that he restricted its use exclusively to charitable contexts. Beyond this iconic role, he gained recognition as the court physician Gaius in the BBC drama Merlin and appeared in numerous films, including Gnomeo & Juliet and Prick Up Your Ears.
His professional life has been marked by diverse commitments, ranging from serving as the Rector of the University of Glasgow in 1996 to narrating albums and presenting investigative journalism on railway failures. Wilson has also been a dedicated campaigner for gay rights, though he maintained privacy regarding his own sexuality until being named in a 2013 list of influential gay figures by Time Out magazine. Despite suffering a heart attack in 2016, which forced the cancellation of a planned one-man show at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, he remains a significant figure in British theatre and television, holding honorary positions with various arts and children's charities.
