In short: Before the animated classic, there was a silent 1924 masterpiece that captured the imagination of Walt Disney. Long feared lost to time, this pioneering adaptation of J. M. Barrie’s play was rediscovered in a music school vault, revealing a version of Neverland that remains surprisingly faithful to the original stage production.

Released on December 29, 1924, by Paramount Pictures, this silent fantasy adventure was the first film adaptation of J. M. Barrie’s 1904 play. Directed by Herbert Brenon, the film featured Betty Bronson as Peter, a casting choice personally selected by Barrie. The production was celebrated for its innovative special effects, particularly in its depiction of Tinker Bell, and it closely mirrored the original stage dialogue through its intertitles.

The narrative follows the familiar journey of the Darling children to Never Never Land, but with distinct nuances. Unlike the later 1953 Disney adaptation, the 1924 version explicitly portrays Wendy’s romantic attachment to Peter, while Peter views her strictly as a mother figure. The film also omits the play's later addition, An Afterthought, which depicts a grown-up Wendy. These creative choices helped shape the vision that would eventually inspire Walt Disney to produce his own company's version.

For decades, the film was presumed lost. Because Paramount held no long-term interest in distribution, most prints were destroyed. However, in the 1950s, film restorer James Card discovered a well-preserved copy at the Eastman School of Music. Later, historian David Pierce found a 16mm print at Disney Studios, which had been acquired when the company bought the rights in 1938. In 1994, the George Eastman House combined these sources for a new restoration, which was later selected for the National Film Registry in 2000.
