In short: When a humanoid alien lands in Rajasthan and loses his spaceship remote, he begins a quest that evolves into a national movement. By questioning religious dogma through an innocent, outsider perspective, the film PK challenged societal norms and shattered global box office records upon its 2014 release.

Directed by Rajkumar Hirani, PK follows a stranded extraterrestrial who learns human language by absorbing memories through touch. His search for his stolen remote-control amulet leads him to interrogate the practices of various religious institutions. The character, played by Aamir Khan, was designed to be Chaplinesque and childlike, providing a fresh, unjaded lens on the hypocrisies of Indian society. To achieve this, Khan adopted distinct mannerisms, including wearing green contact lenses and avoiding blinking during dialogue.

The film’s development was marked by significant creative shifts. Initially, Hirani and writer Abhijat Joshi drafted a story about a character with the ability to enter minds, but they abandoned the project after noticing similarities to the 2010 film Inception. The eventual script took three years to complete. During production, the team experimented with several titles, including Talli and Ek Tha Talli, before settling on the simple, initial-based PK. The production was also notable for its technical demands; to maintain his character’s appearance, Khan chewed over 10,000 betelnut preparations, sometimes consuming 100 in a single day.

Upon its release on 19 December 2014, the film became a cultural and financial phenomenon. It was the first Indian production to surpass ₹7 billion and US$100 million in worldwide earnings, establishing a new benchmark for Bollywood cinema. Its success extended far beyond India, with significant international reach in markets like China, where it became a major hit. The film’s legacy is defined by its ability to blend satire with emotional storytelling, ultimately ranking among the most successful Hindi-language films ever produced.
