How a rejected pitch about an adult astronaut became a spin-off for Sheen Estevez
In short: Planet Sheen began as a different concept entirely, featuring an adult astronaut stranded on a planet of dimwitted aliens. After Nickelodeon rejected that premise for violating their rule that protagonists must be children, the creators pivoted to the Jimmy Neutron universe, eventually centering the show on the eccentric Sheen Estevez.
The origins of Planet Sheen trace back to the development phase of The Adventures of Jimmy Neutron, Boy Genius. Creators Keith Alcorn and Mike Gasaway initially pitched a CGI series titled Red Acres, which followed an adult astronaut. Despite interest from Nickelodeon executives at Viacom headquarters in New York, the project was shelved because the network insisted on child protagonists. Subsequent pitches to Disney, Cartoon Network, and Kids' WB also failed to secure a greenlight.
The concept was eventually retooled to feature characters from the Jimmy Neutron franchise. While the creative team initially proposed a show starring both Carl and Sheen, a Nickelodeon executive mandated that the series focus exclusively on Sheen. To maintain the original dynamic, the team introduced Doppy, an alien character designed to resemble and behave like Carl. With Steven Banks joining the production team in Los Angeles, the series moved into development and was picked up for a 26-episode season.
The narrative follows Sheen after he accidentally launches himself into space by ignoring a warning from Jimmy Neutron. He crashes on the planet Zeenu, located four million and one light-years from Earth. There, he becomes the royal adviser to the Emperor, inadvertently destroying the home of an evil sorcerer named Dorkus. Much of the show focuses on Sheen's attempts to repair his ship while navigating relationships with new companions, including an intelligent chimpanzee named Nesmith and a yodeling girl named Aseefa.
Despite the high-profile origins, the series faced significant criticism. Reviewers like Spencer Bollettieri noted that while Sheen functioned well as a supporting character, he struggled to carry a show on his own. The series premiered on October 2, 2010, and concluded its run on Nicktoons in 2013. Although the production moved from C.O.R.E. in Toronto to Bardel Entertainment in Vancouver, the show ultimately received generally negative assessments for its humor and plot structure.
