In short: Lorna Dane, known as Polaris, is a mutant with the ability to manipulate magnetism. While she is the daughter of the powerful Magneto, her life has been defined by repeated trauma, mind control, and a long, volatile romantic history with her teammate Havok, spanning decades of Marvel comic book storylines.

First introduced in 1968, Lorna Dane initially appeared as a student before her latent mutant abilities were triggered by a device called a psyche-generator. Her early life was marked by a hidden tragedy: she inadvertently caused the plane crash that killed her parents. Magneto, who later claimed to be her father, had her memories of the event erased with the help of Mastermind to protect her from the truth.

Polaris has struggled with severe mental health challenges, including bipolar disorder, which have frequently been exacerbated by external manipulation. She has been subjected to various forms of mind control, serving as a pawn for villains like Mesmero, the Shi'ar agent Erik the Red, and the psionic entity Malice. These experiences often led her to act against her own moral compass, causing her to lose control of her abilities or even turn against her allies in the X-Men.

Her relationship with Alex Summers, or Havok, serves as a central thread in her narrative. The two have been partners, teammates, and lovers, though their bond is famously unstable. Despite her efforts to find stability within groups like X-Factor, she has faced immense loss, including the massacre of the population of Genosha, where she was one of the few survivors. Her journey remains a testament to her resilience as she navigates her complicated lineage and the burden of her own immense power.
