A vampire rock star and a tragic final performance defined this 2002 cult film.
In short: Released in 2002, Queen of the Damned transformed Anne Rice’s gothic lore into a nu metal spectacle. While the film opened at number one, it became a commercial disappointment and a critical failure. It remains best known as the final screen appearance of Aaliyah, who died before its release.
Directed by Michael Rymer, the film adaptation merged plot elements from two of Anne Rice’s novels, The Vampire Lestat and The Queen of the Damned. The narrative follows the vampire Lestat, played by Stuart Townsend, who awakens in the modern era to become a famous rock singer. His music inadvertently stirs Akasha, the ancient progenitor of all vampires, portrayed by Aaliyah. Production took place in Melbourne, Australia, between October 2000 and February 2001, utilizing a converted biscuit factory as a studio.
The film’s production was marked by tragedy. Aaliyah, who had completed her scenes, died in a plane crash on August 25, 2001. The movie was subsequently dedicated to her memory. Musically, the film featured a score and songs by Jonathan Davis of the band Korn. Because of Davis's exclusive contract with Sony BMG, his vocals could not appear on the official soundtrack, leading to re-recordings by various rock vocalists, including Chester Bennington and Marilyn Manson.
Upon its February 22, 2002 release, the film grossed $45.4 million against a $35 million budget. Despite an opening weekend of $14.75 million, it was widely panned by critics, holding a 17% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Author Anne Rice, who initially expressed optimism about the project, eventually disavowed the film, describing her work as having been mutilated. The production also gained notoriety in December 2002, when a Scottish man cited the film as the inspiration for a murder, claiming the character Akasha had commanded him to kill his friend to achieve immortality.
