In short: When a Stranger Calls expanded the famous opening sequence of the 1979 original into a complete psychological thriller. Despite being panned by critics, the film became a financial success, grossing over $67 million worldwide. Its marketing campaign even included an interactive, automated chat program that called users on their phones.

The 2006 production, helmed by filmmaker Simon West and scripted by Jake Wade Wall, reimagines the premise of a babysitter terrorized by an unknown caller. While the original 1979 film by Fred Walton is celebrated for its tense opening act, this version stretches that narrative arc to feature length. The story follows Jill Johnson, a teenager working for the affluent Mandrakis family, who finds herself stalked by a stranger who is revealed to be inside the house. The film concludes with a hospital-set hallucination, a departure from the primary action.

Casting the lead proved challenging, as Evan Rachel Wood declined the role before Camilla Belle accepted. Belle, who initially disliked horror, was persuaded by the director's focus on psychological tension rather than traditional slasher tropes. The production was physically demanding; Belle underwent two months of rigorous training and sustained multiple injuries, including a scarred hand and a head wound from a glass window. Filming took place in California throughout early 2005, utilizing locations like Culver Studios and Bellarmine-Jefferson High School.

Upon its February 2006 release, the film faced harsh reviews, holding an 8% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a 27/100 score on Metacritic. Nevertheless, it opened at number one with $21.6 million and ultimately earned $67.1 million against a $15 million budget. The studio employed innovative digital marketing, including a MySpace profile for the protagonist and an AOL Instant Messenger bot that prompted users to call a toll-free number to hear promotional audio.

The film's legacy remains tied to its status as a polarizing remake. While critics dismissed it as a rote update, the project sparked discussions about potential sequels. In 2020, writer Jake Wade Wall proposed a follow-up that would mirror the structure of the 2018 Halloween reboot, featuring an older Jill Johnson facing a killer who has escaped from an asylum. The film also inspired a mockbuster titled When a Killer Calls, released the same year.
