In short: Loosely adapted from a classic Midway Games title, the 2018 film Rampage features Dwayne Johnson as a primatologist battling mutated, skyscraper-sized beasts. While critics offered mixed reviews, the production utilized cutting-edge visual effects to bring its chaotic vision of a destroyed Chicago to life, ultimately finding success with global audiences.

The journey from arcade cabinet to cinema began in 2009 when Warner Bros. acquired the rights to the 1986 game Rampage as part of a $33 million deal for Midway Games. Producer John Rickard spearheaded the project, recalling his childhood memories of the game. By 2015, Dwayne Johnson was attached to star, and director Brad Peyton was brought on to helm the production, which aimed to serve as a love letter to monster movies like Jaws and Jurassic Park.

The film’s production was a massive technical undertaking. Principal photography began in Chicago in April 2017, with Weta Digital handling the complex visual effects. To realistically depict the destruction of the Chicago Loop, the team used 3D scanners to capture thousands of photographs and studied real-world building collapses. The creature George, a leucistic western lowland gorilla, was brought to life through motion capture, while the other monsters, Ralph and Lizzie, were animated with more creative freedom, resulting in features like porcupine spines and wings.

Despite a $120 million production budget and an additional $140 million for marketing, the film faced challenges, including a threatened lawsuit from director Uwe Boll, who argued the title would confuse audiences with his own unrelated film series. Upon release, Rampage grossed $428 million worldwide. While critical reception remained mixed—with some reviewers finding it fun and others calling it a drag—the film maintained a strong connection with its target audience, even becoming the best-reviewed live-action video game adaptation on Rotten Tomatoes at the time of its release.
