A rustic soap opera that captured a top three spot
In short: Despite mixed critical reviews, Ransom Canyon managed to climb the Netflix rankings shortly after its debut. This romantic neo-Western explores the high-stakes battle between ranching dynasties fighting for land and legacy in a landscape haunted by secrets.
Adapted from the novel series by Jodi Thomas, Ransom Canyon premiered on Netflix in April 2025. The narrative centers on three rival ranching family dynasties locked in a territorial struggle against outside forces threatening their traditional way of life. At its core is Staten Kirkland, a stoic rancher seeking vengeance for a personal loss while navigating a complicated connection with Quinn O'Grady, the owner of the local dancehall. A mysterious cowboy arrives in town to uncover hidden past secrets. The show features a recurring character named Kit Russell starting in the second season.
From February until June 2024, crews filmed at various sites including Las Vegas, Santa Fe, and Albuquerque. While Netflix initially ordered 10 episodes in December 2023, the series faced a turbulent path to completion. It was renewed for a second season in June 2025, which premiered in July 2026, before ultimately being canceled in September 2026 after just two seasons. April Blair served as the series creator and executive producer alongside Dan Angel. Amanda Marsalis took charge of directing the first two episodes.
Critical reception was notably polarized. A score of 45% from 20 reviewers appeared on Rotten Tomatoes; these critics called it a 'serviceable binge' for rustic soap opera lovers while mentioning its inability to rival stronger dramas. Metacritic mirrored this sentiment with a score of 58 out of 100. However, commercial performance told a different story: during the week of April 14–20, 2025, the series ranked as high as third on Netflix in the United States. The production featured a large ensemble including actors like James Brolin and Lizzy Greene. Several cast members departed or joined specifically for the second season's run.
