A Wyoming rancher fights for his land against a mysterious, reality-bending black void.
In short: In the neo-Western series Outer Range, Royal Abbott faces a dual threat: a rival family attempting to seize 1,200 acres of his property and a supernatural phenomenon appearing in his pasture. This genre-bending drama explores the intersection of family legacy and the inexplicable, anchored by a powerhouse lead performance.
Created by Brian Watkins and executive produced by Brad Pitt’s Plan B Entertainment, Outer Range premiered on Amazon Prime Video in April 2022. The narrative centers on Royal Abbott, played by Josh Brolin, whose life in Wyoming is upended by the arrival of a drifter named Autumn and the discovery of a strange, dark hole on his land. The series weaves together the Abbott family's struggle to maintain their ranch and the disappearance of their daughter-in-law, Rebecca, with the encroaching ambitions of the neighboring Tillerson family.
The show is notable for its ambitious blend of Western tropes and science fiction, a combination that drew polarized reactions from critics. While some reviewers, such as those at Inverse, lauded the series as one of the boldest genre-bending works of the 21st century, others criticized its pacing and narrative coherence. The first season, which consisted of eight episodes, received a 79% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics frequently highlighted the strong performances of Brolin, Imogen Poots, and Lili Taylor as a primary strength, even when the writing was described as uneven.
Following the first season, the series underwent a leadership change, with Charles Murray replacing Watkins as showrunner for the second season. This seven-episode follow-up, released in May 2024, was met with more favorable reviews, holding a 92% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics noted that the second season demonstrated a better grasp of its characters and a willingness to embrace its weirder elements. Despite this critical improvement, Amazon canceled the series in July 2024, concluding the story after two seasons.
