In short: How do you turn a grainy, 40-year-old tape recording into a polished studio masterpiece? When the surviving Beatles reunited to finish John Lennon's 'Real Love,' they faced a technical nightmare: a demo plagued by extreme hiss, electrical hum, and erratic timing that required a week of digital surgery just to make it usable.

The song's journey began in 1977 when John Lennon recorded it on a handheld tape recorder at home. It was originally part of an unfinished stage play titled The Ballad of John and Yoko. By 1979, the track had evolved into a demo titled 'Real Life,' which Lennon abandoned after several takes. It wasn't until the early 1990s that the idea of completing the work surfaced, sparked by road manager Neil Aspinall and George Harrison requesting demos from Yoko Ono.

The recording process was fraught with emotional and technical hurdles. Producer Jeff Lynne described the demo as having 'a terrible amount of hiss' and a '60 cycles mains hum' because it was recorded at such a low level. The team spent a full week cleaning the audio just to make it transferable to a DAT master. To ensure the final product felt 'Beatles-y' and timeless, the group deliberately avoided state-of-the-art gear, opting instead for classic instruments like a Baldwin Combo Harpsichord and a harmonium.

To achieve the desired sound, the band made the unconventional choice to speed up the tape by 12%, raising the key from D minor to E minor. Despite the technical complexities, Ringo Starr recalled the atmosphere as 'very relaxed,' noting that the three remaining members often pretended John had simply 'gone out for tea' to help them focus on the emotional weight of the project. Released in 1996, it became the last new Beatles single until 2023.
