In short: In 1921, the residents of a growing California community faced a bureaucratic hurdle: they needed a post office but couldn't have one under their current name. To secure this essential service, ninety-two locals agreed to abandon their original identity and adopt a new name that would become a permanent fixture of the San Fernando Valley.

Established during 1912 under the title Marian, this district took its identity from Harrison Gray Otis's child, Marian Otis Chandler, who was a Los Angeles Times publisher's offspring. By the end of the 1930s, the region had evolved into a primary lettuce supplier for the country, having previously focused on farming. However, a logistical necessity forced a rebranding. In 1921, when it became clear that a Fourth Class Post Office was required to serve the district, authorities ruled that the name 'Marian' would cause mail distribution confusion.

To resolve this, ninety-two residents convened and voted to rename the town Reseda. The name was inspired by the fragrant plant Reseda odorata (mignonette), which was common in Mediterranean-climate gardens at the time. Local records show a new post office bearing the name Reseda was dedicated on May 26, 1922, and officially opened on July 1 with its first receipt of $1.59. This move ensured the community would have its own mail service, even though it meant erasing 'Marian' from the map.

The transition marked a shift toward modernization. While the area remained primarily agricultural through the mid-20th century—producing lima beans, sugar beets, and walnuts—it saw a massive population explosion in the early 1950s. As orange groves were plowed under for single-family dwellings to house returning World War II veterans, Reseda evolved from a rural farming hub into one of the most populated communities in the San Fernando Valley.
