A California town named for its park-like beauty survived a devastating 19th-century drought.
In short: Newbury Park, California, began as a rancher's dream of a scenic, healthful retreat. When a brutal 30-month drought bankrupted its founder in 1877, the town faced ruin. Yet, the name survived, evolving from a remote agricultural outpost into a modern hub for biotechnology and high-tech industry.
In 1871, Egbert Starr Newbury and his wife Fannie moved from Michigan to the Conejo Valley, seeking a healthful climate. By 1874, Newbury had purchased 2,200 acres of land, which he named 'Newbury Park' because the landscape reminded him of a park. He became the area's first postmaster in 1875, establishing a local identity that persisted even as the region underwent significant transformation. The community was then a remote, rugged frontier where residents lived miles apart without basic infrastructure like schools or churches.
The dream collapsed during the severe drought of 1876–1878, which saw only six inches of rain over 30 months. The lack of water decimated crops and livestock, forcing Newbury into bankruptcy and a return to Michigan in 1877. Despite the sale of his land at a sheriff's sale in 1878, the name 'Newbury Park' remained attached to the post office and the community. Throughout the 20th century, the area resisted total absorption into the neighboring city of Thousand Oaks, maintaining a distinct identity despite annexation efforts that began in the 1960s.
Today, Newbury Park is a blend of its rural history and modern development. While it remains home to equestrian areas and scenic trails near the Santa Monica Mountains, it has also become a center for high-technology and biotechnology, hosting the world headquarters of Amgen. The area’s deep history is preserved through sites like the Stagecoach Inn Museum and the Satwiwa Native American Indian Culture Center, which honor the long-standing Chumash presence in the region, dating back thousands of years before the arrival of European settlers.
