In short: The 2016 film Risen reimagines the aftermath of the crucifixion through the eyes of a skeptical Roman soldier. Tasked by Pontius Pilate to locate the missing body of Yeshua to prevent an uprising, Clavius embarks on a hunt that challenges his polytheistic worldview and his loyalty to the Roman Empire.

Directed by Kevin Reynolds, Risen functions as a mystery-thriller that approaches the biblical narrative from an unconventional angle. The story follows Clavius, a tribune of Legio X Fretensis, who is ordered to suppress unrest in Jerusalem. After supervising the execution of Yeshua, Clavius finds himself tasked with a grim investigation: finding the body that has vanished from its tomb. The film, which was produced as an American-Spanish collaboration, was filmed on location in Malta and Spain during the latter half of 2015.

As Clavius tracks down witnesses, he encounters accounts that defy his Roman sensibilities. His search leads him to a confrontation with the reality of the resurrection, forcing him to abandon his service to the god Mars and join the followers of Yeshua. The narrative explores the tension between Roman authority and the growing movement of the apostles, culminating in the miraculous healing of a leper and the eventual ascension of Yeshua into Heaven. The film’s production, which had a budget of $20 million, aimed to provide a detective-style perspective on the Gospel story.

Upon its release in February 2016, the film received a mixed critical reception, holding a 53% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. While some reviewers, such as Richard Roeper, critiqued the lead performance as overly stoic, others praised the film for its higher production values compared to typical faith-based cinema. Audiences were more receptive, awarding it an 'A-' grade via CinemaScore. A notable stylistic choice throughout the movie is the use of British accents for both Roman and Jewish characters, a convention often employed to signify historical authority in period dramas.

Financially, the film grossed a worldwide total of $46.8 million. It opened in the United States to $11.8 million, placing third at the box office behind Deadpool and Kung Fu Panda 3. Following its theatrical run, the film saw success on home media, debuting in second place on sales charts for the week ending May 29, 2016, shortly after its digital and physical release.
