How the 2006 Robin Hood series aimed to capture the Saturday night family audience
In short: Designed to fill the gap left by Doctor Who, the 2006 BBC production of Robin Hood brought a modern, high-definition aesthetic to the classic legend. With a reported budget of eight million pounds and intensive training for its cast, the show sought to balance family-friendly adventure with contemporary stylistic flair.
Created by Dominic Minghella and Foz Allan, the series launched on 7 October 2006 on BBC One. It featured Jonas Armstrong as the titular hero, returning from the Third Crusade to find Nottingham under the oppressive rule of the Sheriff, played by Keith Allen. The production was filmed in Hungary, where the cast underwent a rigorous 'Hood academy' to master archery, sword fighting, and horse riding before cameras began rolling.
The show’s structure relied on thirteen 45-minute episodes per season, with a narrative that evolved from traditional folk-tale roots into complex character dynamics. While the first series focused on Robin’s return and his relationship with Lady Marian, later seasons introduced new allies and antagonists, including Prince John and the ruthless Isabella. The series was notable for its willingness to experiment, though its use of anachronistic styles and modern political references drew mixed critical reactions and even parody from programs like Dead Ringers.
Despite a strong start and a significant cult following that persisted long after its cancellation, the show faced production hurdles. The departure of key actors, including Jonas Armstrong, led the BBC to end the series after its third season in 2009. Although writer Sally Wainwright was approached to oversee a creative revamp for a potential fourth season, the project was never commissioned. The series remains a notable entry in the long history of Robin Hood adaptations, having been broadcast in numerous countries and made available on various streaming platforms.
