From the cockpit to the screen: the pilot who became a staple
In short: Before he was a recognizable face in major television dramas, Roger Cross was a professional pilot. This transition from the literal skies to the narrative ones highlights a unique career pivot, moving from aviation to becoming a versatile character actor in some of the most popular sci-fi and crime series of the last three decades.
Born in Christiana, Jamaica, in 1969, Roger Cross moved to Vancouver, British Columbia, at the age of eleven. Before entering the acting world, his career began in aviation, where he served as a pilot after graduating from Trinity Western University with a degree in General Studies and Aviation. This background in a high-stakes, technical field provided a foundation for a career that would eventually span across television, film, and voice acting. Cross entered the acting world in the 1990s, building a resume through guest roles in heavy-hitting sci-fi and drama series like The X-Files, Stargate SG-1, and Star Trek: Enterprise. Interestingly, he once tried out for the Stargate SG-1 part of Teal'c, though Christopher Judge secured the position instead.
He eventually secured a lead role as Joshua Bridges on the sci-fi series First Wave, which ran from 1998 to 2001. His mainstream breakthrough came in 2005 with the Fox drama 24, where he played CTU Agent Curtis Manning. The actor has remained busy in the business, starring in Dark Matter, Continuum, and Arrow, while providing voices for Swamp Thing and John Stewart within the DC Animated Movie Universe. His career also extends to the gaming world, where he provided the voice for Ulysses in the Fallout: New Vegas expansion. A nomination for Best Lead Actor in a drama series at the 2019 Canadian Screen Awards was granted to him for his performance in Coroner.
